The business impact of RTG-AutoStrad™ terminal conversion

Rubber-Tyred Gantry crane (RTG) terminals are currently the world's most widespread type of container terminals. They offer high capacity with a relatively low initial capital investment, along with a reasonably flexible operation model that allows cranes to moved from stack to stack when needed. However, the traditional model of RTGs served by terminal tractors (TTs) offer limited options for next-generation solutions that utilise the benefits of automation while helping terminals electrify and decarbonise their operations. Kalmar AutoStrad™ automated straddle carriers offer the perfect upgrade path for some RTG terminals, enabling highly efficient use of the terminal land area with an extremely flexible operational model.

Myth #5: Container scheduling and decking should be done by the TOS

To wrap up this series on the automated straddle carrier concept, we need to put to rest one final untruth. This is the idea that the Terminal Operating System is the best place to handle decision-making for the decking and scheduling of containers at the terminal.

Myth #4: Automated yard operations require super advanced quay cranes

There is a general assumption that automated terminals require particularly complex ship-to-shore cranes. At least for Kalmar AutoStrad™, the opposite is in fact true. Kalmar automated straddle carriers only require a basic level of crane instrumentation and once this is in place, automated straddle carriers are much more flexible than automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in how they operate with the crane.

Myth #3: Automated straddle carrier operations can’t be electrified

In conversations with terminal operators, we often encounter the idea that whatever other benefits they may offer, automated straddle carrier terminals are difficult to electrify, and hence are not a viable option for terminals looking to move to all-electric operation.
